I wrote

Since writing to you on the 23rd August

we have had a telegram from the Governor of

Hong Kong drawing attention to the likelihood

of substantial contributions, which the

Vice-Chancellor of the University estimates

at not less than £100,000, being forthcoming

from the local Chinese community if H.M.G.

are able to announce their support of the

establishment of a University as recommended

by the Committee. The Governor goes on to

say that, if this support is not forthcoming,

Chinese subscriptions will be small.

We have no record that this

possibility has been mentioned before, but

you will no doubt agree that, if there is

a disposition on the part of the local

residents to contribute towards the

rehabilitation of the University, we ought

certainly to try to derive the greatest

possible benefit from it. In our view it is

certainly a further factor in support of
